“I'm always drawn to artwork that is made from more delicate materials but has a bold output.” – Gina Occhiogrosso
Gina Occhiogrosso grew up in an artistic household. Her father was a musician and her mother an artist. As a child, she would make drawings for her mom as a way to communicate and uplift her through difficult emotional challenges. Gina’s mother also taught her needlepoint and embroidery, and both of her grandmothers were seamstresses. Fabric and craft have always been intertwined into her artistic practice, using collage and muslin to create work that she hopes will allow viewers to look closely and discover something new.
Gina’s artistic process is not planned; instead, it is a symbiotic dance of control and chaos where she brings weaving and collage together into her paintings. She places available materials on the floor, and from there, intuitively cuts, draws, and sews, allowing for the act of creation to bring her paintings to life. The interlay of muslin, a soft yet stretchy fabric, with sewn collages of paint and ink comes together through Gina’s process of chaotic making. A seam can be found throughout her paintings, demonstrating this complexity and intricate overlay of material. Aware of art history’s precedence of celebrating male painters, Gina’s artwork bridges the masculinity of large-scale paintings by incorporating fragile fabric and craft as a method to demonstrate the presence of feminine strength.
Often, Gina will incorporate cut-up photographs into her collages that articulate a personal challenge or a societal issue she is currently grappling with. Her artistic process utilizes familiar objects and weaves them together using fabric as a way to communicate thoughts, feelings, memories, or emotions that she may be grappling with at any given time. To Gina, this free-form process of making art is imperative to her practice and the final product, where her love of play and surprising people can play out—showcasing a new way of thinking of what a painting could be.
Gina Occhiogrosso lives in upstate New York. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from SUNY Buffalo in Buffalo, New York.
